About us

CMITO is the Industry Training Organisation for the communications and media industries. We act as a central hub for the diverse industries we represent, developing tertiary and on-the-job training options, fulfilling NZQA requirements and providing a strategic training overview.

Our related ITOs are made up of industry experts who develop and maintain the workplace training programmes key to furthering education within our vibrant sector.

The New Zealand Journalists Training Organisation (NZJTO) looks after the training of journalists working in print, radio, television and multi-media. PrintNZ Training represents those working in printing, pre-press, packaging and print finishing.

In future, more ITOs from the communications and media industries can be added to CMITO, providing a representative force in industry training for the wider industry grouping.

By uniting our industry sectors, CMITO is able to tap into the collective knowledge they possess. By ensuring we are close to and understand the various needs of employers, Government, providers, tertiary sector, schools and learners, we are at the heart of the industry.

Facilitating the future

We are focused on the future of our industry and are committed to building a highly trained and technologically skilled communications and media workforce.

We do this by:

• ensuring a trainee or apprentice can easily work their way through the qualification framework to reach their career goal
• ensuring that employers have the right staff with the right training to contribute to better profitability
• making sure that the funding is available to support new qualifications that the industry greatly needs.

Evolution and growth

CMITO has been established to recognise the evolving needs of the industry and ensure a better base for the future. By remaining in touch with the needs of our stakeholders and ensuring that our systems and processes can collect and communicate the knowledge we generate, we will take a leadership role in the industry.

CMITO provides a working model for future development of the industry. In time, we will widen the scope of the ITO to include multi-media, graphic design, broadcasting, film and outdoor advertising.”
